What is Kanban?
Kanban is a visual way of managing work and materials. The word comes from Japanese and is commonly translated as "signboard" or "visual card". It was developed at Toyota as part of the Toyota Production System and is built around a pull principle: work or replenishment starts when a signal says something has been consumed, instead of being pushed through the factory on a forecast.
The core ideas are simple: make the flow of work visible, limit how much work is in progress, pull work forward only when there is capacity, and keep improving the flow. A card on a board, or a bin that runs empty, becomes the signal.
Why physical Kanban boards fall short
They are local
Status is visible only to people standing in front of the board.
They need manual updates
Cards are moved by hand, so information is late or wrong when people are busy.
They keep little history
It is hard to analyze trends, bottlenecks or compliance after the fact.
They are disconnected
A board does not talk to your MES or ERP, so data has to be re-keyed.
They do not scale
Adding plants, lines or products means more physical boards and more walking.
What digital Kanban changes
Digital Kanban keeps the proven principles and moves the signals into software. This is how VeKanban compares with a traditional approach.
| Traditional Kanban | Digital Kanban (VeKanban) | |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Integration | Standalone system | Seamless ERP and MES integration |
| Audit & Regulatory Compliance | Manual record-keeping | Comprehensive digital compliance records |
| Digital vs. Physical | Physical boards | RFID and IoT technology for smart factory systems |
| Global Visibility | Limited to local facilities | Global real-time visibility |
| Scalability | Cumbersome physical expansion | Effortless scalability |
| Decision-Making | Slow, manual processes | Immediate data-driven decisions |
| Insights | Manual updates with delays | Real-time digital insights |
| Accuracy | Prone to human error | Automated accuracy |
| Access | On-site access only | Access from any device, anywhere |
| History | Limited or non-existent history | Complete production history storage |
| Updates | Sequential updates | Simultaneous stakeholder updates |
| Alerting | Manual observation | Customizable threshold alerts |
| Environmental impact | Paper waste and unnecessary travel | Reduced environmental impact |
How digital Kanban fits with MES, MOM and ERP
VeKanban plugs into your existing Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and connects ERP planning to the shop floor, so MOM, MES and ERP layers exchange data instead of working as separate silos.
| Without VeKanban | With VeKanban integration |
|---|---|
| Data Silos: MOM and MES operate independently | Unified Ecosystem: seamless data flow across all layers |
| Disconnected Planning: ERP planning isolated from execution | Integrated Planning: ERP strategy directly connected to the shop floor |
| Manual Coordination: time-consuming manual data transfers | Automated Synchronization: real-time data integration |
| Limited Visibility: fragmented view of operations | End-to-End Visibility: complete operational transparency |
| Slow Decision Making: delayed insights due to system gaps | Rapid Response: real-time decision support |
| Compliance Gaps: disconnected regulatory tracking | Integrated Compliance: unified regulatory management |
Three levels of control
Production Control
Mastering what, when, and how much to produce through intelligent work order management, dynamic scheduling, inventory optimization, and seamless resource allocation.
Process Control
Ensuring each manufacturing step operates under optimal conditions through continuous monitoring, feedback mechanisms, and proactive intervention.
Production Parameter Control
Maintaining precise control over specific variables that directly impact product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
What to look for when evaluating digital Kanban software
Whichever vendor you consider, these questions separate a digital whiteboard from a manufacturing-grade system.
- Does it integrate with the MES and ERP you already run, without manual data transfers?
- Can you see several plants or lines in one real-time view?
- Can alerts be configured by threshold and routed to the right people?
- Does it store production history and support audit and regulatory records?
- Can it work with RFID and IoT signals from the shop floor?
- Can people use it from any device, not just a control-room screen?
- Does it scale to new lines and sites without re-implementing it?
